Cummins Inline 7 vs Nexiq USB Link 2

I am going to by by adapter for Cummins but I am confused between Inline 7 and NEXIQ USB Link 2…..

please any advice and what is the difference between both of them.

Nothing different other than inline comes with inline harness to plug into any Cummins harness if you can’t talk through oem side

Inline 7 is built by NEXIQ USB Link for Cummins. They slap their sticker on it, and give you the extra harness to plug into the backbone directly.

I ordered an inline 6 to get the extra goodies for benching and they sent a 7 instead. I’m not complaining, lol. I haven’t installed it yet, but it may have a different firmware than the “real” usb link 2. I’ll find out when I get around to installing it since I now have one of each.

i can use inline 7 for everything from ddct to jpro and n14. from OBD2ESHOP.COM to new works great for programming real fast. Sometimes cummins only like cummins adapters, like n14 m11 570 stuff like that in my experience at least

The two differences I have noticed are:

1. Inline 7 has wifi and bluetooth at the time, nexiq only one at a time.

2. Nexiq 2 has more protocols than Inline 7, for example the Inline 7 does not work with Hino, Toyota, Isuzu.

Q1: Can I update your XTruck 125032 USB Link? Where? How?
A1: Sorry, please do not update XTruck 125032 USB Link, otherwise it will not work.

Q2: Does your XTruck 125032 needs password when use this software?
A: No. It does not need the password. There is the user manual in the package, please follow the manual and install the software in right way.

Q3: I followed the instructions step by step to install the drivers. I didn't have internet connection and I never tried to update the USB-Link. The "POWER" light" got on and the "DATA" & "FAULT" lights go on and off, on and off. And the device manager show and hide the USB-link drive.
A3:  This is because you install the original new driver and the XTruck is broken, you need to return back to us for repair. (Note: please do not install the original software with our hardware.)

Q4: I want to use this XTruck to work on Volvo Bus and Isuzu truck, but find that there is no communication between this two models, what is the problem? What about CAT?
A4: Hardware of XTruck is not compatible with Volvo Bus, hardware does not support. Our Isuzu software is North American version. You can use it to work on North American Isuzu. Nexiq is not very good at diagnose CAT too. Especially for Asian Cat. Up to now, this Nexiq only support CAT with J1939 and J1708 protocol. But for Cat engine, basically protocol is CDL, it is specially for CAT models. For J1939 Protocol, CAT model does not use yet.

Q5: When i install the software ready, i start the engine, software prompt me error code 275.00, what's the meaning? As the photo shown:
A6: Problem is that you do not installed the driver ready, so this software does not recognize the hardware. Please install the driver again.

Q6: When i use this XTruck to connect the truck, power and data light keeps flashing, what's wrong?
A6: Problem is that you update this XTruck. Do not update it when you use it. We have state this information on the page. For update, you need to send it back to us, we will repair it for you.

Q7: When i load Isuzu IDSS software, i am failed. And software gives me this error prompt: "CRC error: the file C:\Program Files\IDSS\ images\2007icvch \processed\fullsize\fullb606.rra doesnt match the file in the setup's.cab file."
A7: For this prompt, it is caused by two reasons: 1) You do not use the right way to load this software, follow the user manual to do it; 2) Your system does not compatible this software.

Q8: When i open the software, i meet this prompt: "Unable to read value software\Mack Trucks, Inc\Common\Device ID". First i choose "Preferences",  next "RP123A Device name", then i find XTruck USB in the drop down box. Why this happen?
A7: For your problem, it is caused by the following reason:
1) Your driver is not installed ready. Check your driver installation and install the patch file of the CD.
2) Your computer has other software that is not compatible with this software, or there is XTruck software has installed on your computer before. Change another computer to install the software again.

Q9: When i use this software to work on cars, it gives prompt: " Error 10110: An error has occurred in the application. Contact helpdesk.". How to solve this?

A9: hello, this prompt is software does not support your car, please change other software to check if it can work on other cars, better to use cummins software to test. to check if firmware work normally or not.

(Buying Guide)Nexiq USB Link 1 or 2? WiFi or Bluetooth?

Nexiq 1 or Nexiq 2?

Nexiq 1 is discontinued. no more updates but for most people it will still work just fine.
Nexiq 2 is the current model and has more future potential than what the nexiq 1 could do.

Cables for each are different so they are not interchangeable. When ordering, you should make sure you get 3 different cables. The standard 6/9 pin y-cable with the green connector on the 9 pin plug so you can communicate to the newer 500k baud network. A standard OBD II cable and an OBD II Cat cable to talk to Caterpillar engines in GM trucks. If you need to communicate to trailer ABS, you will also need a PLC adapter.

Do NOT buy the inexpensive clones that normally come with multiple cables. The clones are not reliable and if they update with nexiq software, they will become a brick.

The nexiq 2 clones don't have 26 pin cables just the standard fitting also the usb connector is different and there is a hole by the usb connector on the clones as well.

Nexiq wifi or bluetooth?

Both will work off bluetooth but I find bluetooth very slow. It's faster and easier just to use a cable to connect to the laptop. The cable is a standard USB "printer" cable. I like using a 5 meter cable so I can move the laptop out of the truck is I have to. There are times I've used the laptop on the other side of the truck and even under the truck. The long cable makes it easier. Occasionally, I'll use bluetooth.

I have no idea what the wifi option is. To me, that would mean if the nexiq is communicating to the laptop over wifi then the laptop's network connection isn't connected to a router. Just ignore any wifi options.

SnapOn is the vendor for NEXIQ and a new NEXIQ will run you around $1000. I have seen original ones sell on Ebay in the $500-$600 range.

Nexiq 1 or 2? wifi or bluetooth?

I've been able to talk to everything I need to with my Nexiq 1. It all depends on what software you're using and what type of cable connections you have but they all will work with a nexiq. With the right software and an OBDII cable, I can even communicate to automotive. I used the OBDII cable yesterday to talk to a Hino.

There are a lot of other types of datalinks you can use and they will all work fine. Nexiq has sort of become the standard that all the software will work with plus you can get some add ons to make it better. The nexiq 1 didn't originally come with a cable lock and the USB cable could break the connector on the motherboard if it was hit, bent etc from normal usage. I think they all come with the cable lock now which prevents the connector from being damaged. Mine also has a rubber protective boot that keeps it from getting damaged while being bumped and banged around from normal use.

There are a few vehicles that the nexiq just won't talk to. Things like Mitsubishi (GM city delivery trucks etc) require a propriety datalink and there are a few others like that also. Espar heaters comes to mind. You need special hardware to communicate with them and it's never inexpensive.

I just went to the nexiq site and downloaded the nexiq 2 wifi manual to see what it says. There are 2 options for wifi. peer to peer where the nexiq is connected directly to the laptop which means a second wifi card is required for the laptop if you want to stay connected to the companies network or you can allow the nexiq 2 to connect to the companies wifi network and your laptop connects to the nexiq through that network.

I find network communication to be sketchy at times. The position of the router in our shop gives poor wifi outside the shop so if you're out of wifi range, you need to switch to a peer to peer connection. Personally, just go with the bluetooth version if you really need to do a wireless connection. 99.999% of the time, I connect through a USB cable because it connects quicker and the connection speed is much faster. If you ever need to do reprogramming, cable connection is highly recommended.

Wifi may have a much longer range but bluetooth will normally have around a 20-30 foot range. If your laptop is 20-30 feet away from the vehicle you are connected to, that's a lot of walking to go back and forth from the truck to the laptop. A simple USB cable works much better.

I also noticed that the Nexiq 2 uses a different USB cable than what the Nexiq 1 uses. I guess the simplest way to describe it is the Nexiq 1 uses a USB printer cable end and the Nexiq 2 uses a digital camera end. I can't remember the technical names from each end but they're all easy to find cables if you need them in different lengths.

In conclusion, you’ll get what you pay for. Be careful to buy a Nexiq clone off! You may have issues with all the lights blink and they can not connect any more, you can not get warranty on Chinese clones so you are out of luck.If you still want to have a cheap clone one, OBDexpress.co.uk is the the only supplier i recommend; he’s a man of his word to trust in. It begins as obdexpress.co.uk and turns to be obdexpress.co.uk. I’ve known this site for 7 years around, items from him are used with relief be’coz of professional tech support there. Nexiq USB Link 2 genuine and the clone, any difference?

THE PACKAGING

Lets start with the most simple way to tell the difference, and that is the packaging. This not only includes what the product looks like, but the included accessories as well. Throughout this post, we will be posting side-by-side images, with the genuine Nexiq USB Link 2 on the left, and the china clone USB Link 2 on the right. As you see from the pictures below, the genuine USB Link 2 comes in a nice, hard plastic case. The image on the right is from the China clone, which comes with no case at all. The cables and adapter have been stuffed in the box.

We also then take the contents out to compare. The original device, again shown on the left, comes with the adapter (with all the stickers attached), 6/9-pin long cable, a special USB cable (Which we will discuss more on this later), along with some paperwork. The USB Link 2 clone adapter comes with a HUGE assortment of cables, covering pretty much everything. It also has loose stickers to place on the tool, along with a 3-disc DVD set

In summary, the genuine USB Link 2 will come in a hard plastic case and will only come with the USB Cable and 6/9 pin cable. The fake and clone adapters from China and beyond will come with a large assortment of cables, along with multiple DVD discs.

THE CABLE CONNECTOR

So far, not a huge deal. You can save $400, and not just get a cheap plastic box, right? Well, there are many more differences, so lets start with the cables and the connector on the Nexiq USB Link 2. Again, the image on the left is what the bottom connector looks like on the genuine adapter. The image on the right is the china clone.

In summary, the genuine USB Link 2 will come with a 26-pin male connector for the cables, while the clone USB Link 2 will come with a 15-pin male connector. Remember, Nexiq put an authentication chip in each cable, so how possibly can these clones be doing this? The answer is that the china clone adapters are simply Nexiq USB Link original circuit boards placed in USB Link 2 cases. We will continue to prove this point as we move on.

THE CABLES

One thing that people may like about the China USB Link is that it comes with a wide assortment of cables — 8 different ones. The original only comes with the standard 6 & 9 pin cable, which is used on commercial trucks. The first thing we notice, is that the part numbers are on labels from the China device. Upon inspection of these cables, we find these are all cables for the Nexiq USB Link original, NOT the new USB Link 2. This further proves the point that the China adapter is just an original USB Link in disguise

The other issue is that the included 6/9 pin cable from the China clone is NOT the new green 9-pin that has been used in all model 2016 model year trucks. This means that this cable will not physically connect to any trucks built in 2016 or newer. Even if you had the correct cable, we have serious doubts that this China clone is cable of handling the new 500k bus speeds that use this green connector.

In summary, the USB Link 2 clone from China comes with more cables, yet they are cables for the original USB Link. The included 9-pin from China also will not fit or work on 2016 model year and newer trucks.

USB CABLE

The USB connection port is also different on China knock-off versus the genuine USB Link 2. With the USB Link 2, there is a fancy clip on the USB cable to prevent it from being detached from the adapter. On the clone tool, we find that it is a “regular” USB cable connector, like you would find on a printer or larger USB device. On the USB Link 2 clone we received, this cable was actually very difficult to push in, and the plastic cracked a little when we did. Yet again, another reason to stay away from this tool and prove that it is a fake/clone.

The other important item to note is that on the clone/fake adapter, you will see that there is a hole in the bottom. On the genuine adapter, this is an actual button that you would push.

CIRCUIT BOARD

Now that we’ve explored all of the components, lets take a look at the actual circuit board inside the adapters. Again, we have the genuine adapter on the left and the China clone on the right. Without being a computer engineer, you can see the differences in the boards right away. The clone adapter is actually 2 circuit boards, with wiring in between, while the original is a solid, once piece circuit board. The clone version also contains no Bluetooth chip, so it is USB only.

NEXIQ USB LINK 2 CLONE STICKER COMPARISON

We also thought it a good idea to show you the adapters side-by-side. In the first view of the front, you can see some noticeable differences. The sticker on the front, while the same size, has the order of the LED lights and also the size of the icons different. Both adapters will show the Bluetooth Logo, however the China version does not have Bluetooth built into it. The genuine adapter also shows an icon for an iPad and iPhone.

On the back side of the adapter, the sticker is a completely different size and much smaller on the USB Link 2 clone. There is also far less information, including the fact that is says “Made in China”, while the original does not.

SUMMARY

In summary, we highly suggest staying away from the USB Link 2 clone adapters. Using a USB Link 2 clone will cause you nothing but problems, and just isn’t worth the hassle of saving a couple dollars. There are plenty of other RP1210 adapters that are priced less then a Nexiq USB Link 2, and are also made by legit manufacturers in the USA. The following is a list of things you can look for if you are thinking about purchasing one:

• It doesn’t come in a black plastic case
• It comes with more then just the 6/9 pin “long” cable
• The connector on the bottom is a 15-pin female
• The 9-pin connector isn’t green
• The USB cable doesn’t “clamp” into the Nexiq USB Link 2
• There is a hole at the bottom of the tool where the cable plugs in
• The sticker on the front looks different then it should

Of course If you are a DIYer, the clone is OK for you. But you should have a HQ Nexiq clone. For cheap craps, forget it. You’ll get what you pay for. 100% certain.

Be careful to buy a Nexiq clone off

I have had several people having issues with all the lights blink and they can not connect any more, you can not get warranty on Chinese clones so you are out of luck. Also Chinese clones are made with much lower quality than the real Nexiq.

I have had so many support issues that ended up being bad Chinese Nexiq adapters that I warn customers that if they have a Chinese adapter, they are on their own, I don’t support them and Nexiq won’t warranty them. Be Very careful who you buy a Nexiq off of. TRVideo is a supplier of the real Nexiq and has great support so that is the only source I recommend (Truck Parts Today)
